“This Norwegian fusion quintet features the same instrumental lineup as Mahavishnu Orchestra, so comparisons to John McLaughlin’s legendary ’70s band are probably inevitable. But on the basis of Grand General’s eponymous 2013 Rune Grammofon debut, such comparisons would merely scratch the surface. The bandmembers have the chops to match any fusioneers past or present, but they’re also fond of the relentless rock pummel, undergirding their pyrotechnics with a powerful rhythm section possessing deep reserves of energy.”
Acid Mothers Temple & Space Paranoid – Black Magic Satori (2013)
“Japan’s premiere psych collective come together again and form Acid Mothers Temple & Space Paranoid. More stoner rock than psych, this collection of tracks emulate Black Sabbath in all the best ways possible. Slow, doomy starts lead to endless jams and stoner drone.”
The Myrrors – Solar Collector (2013)
“With little attention to singing, Tucson’s The Myrrors instead focus on a unique brand of desert rock where atmosphere and experimentalism are both psyche and prog-rock fueled. Each track here winds its own distinct and complicated path, from droning and muted to bursts of jazz fusion and all with a haunting, mysterious backdrop. The band are never in a hurry to get anywhere, instead focusing on manipulating each moment before moving into other unpredictable realms.”
Krautzone – Kosmische Rituale (2013)
“Krautzone was formed in September 2011 automatic – it just created itself totally spontaneous and autonomous: They met at the moonbase, to spend a nice time together. THE moment came and they decided to play music, so they fired the aggregates, pressed the recording button and improvised on the fly. After this session they all thought it’s like holidays from their actual bands like Electric Moon, Zone Six, The Pancakes.”
Mind Mountain – Mind Mountain (2013)
“Liverpool heavy space Rock band MIND MOUNTAIN have accrued an impressive live reputation in a relatively short space of time. Dealing in lengthy instrumental prog/psych jams that feature a bewildering amount of improvisation and intuitive music-making, the three-piece successfully combine reckless abandon and pinpoint accuracy. The trio have so far recorded three weighty slabs of dense riffage and hypnotic grooves into the world, the cuts boasting the influences and love of the likes Hawkwind, Budgie and early 70’s Progressive rock.”
Papir meets Electric Moon – The Papermoon Sessions (2013)
“Led by Sula Bassana‘s (Dave Schmidt‘s) fuzzed-out, heavy guitar explorations, Electric Moon weave pure-psychedelia, dub, doom, krautrock and drone into kosmische improvisations via a myriad of intergalactic riffs, stellar effects and deep-space transmissions. The overall vibe of their epic but hypnotic freak-outs can be utterly mesmerizing or darker than the depths of the most monstrous of black holes, but all the while remaining deeply psychedelic. Sounding vital and fresh, Papir‘s cutting-edge take on psychedelica doesn’t hark back to a bygone era, but voyages through lush valleys of atmospheric soundscapes into peaks of wah wah driven, explosive guitar solos, all propelled by jazz-inflicted motorik grooves that serve to give the louder parts more impact. The band’s use of balance and structure, freedom and power, heaviness and laid back atmospheres comes to full fruition on their latest album, the terrific III, out on Causa Sui‘s adventurous El Paraiso label, and puts Papir squarely in the vanguard of the booming European psychedelic rock scene, along with Electric Moon.”
Yuri Gagarin – Yuri Gagarin (2013)
“It’s a quality release, crafted by people that obviously know the right buttons to press to make people float down the stream of their own consciousness, abandoning their ego while flying through the electric field of matter and time and onwards towards the Great Truth. It’s a groove-fest made by stoners for stoners, and has a kickass cover you could lose yourself in. Now can you dig that my psychedelic brothers and sisters.”
Psicomagia – Psicomagia (2013)
“Landing in the era of 1968-1970 when Soft Machine, Magma, The Miles Davis Group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tony Williams Lifetime and many other were innovating the foundational basis to the 70′s rich fusion movements, Psicomagia bleeds with heart wrenching layers of amplified progressive psychedelia… Psicomagia in easily one of the best progressive rock albums to come out in years, if not decades and we are really astonished at how much better the album gets with every new listen. Progressive rock music has always remained vibrant in rock culture and Psicomagia has really taken the sub genre to new heights with their debut album.”
Monomyth – Monomyth (2013)
“Do you like music that pulls you out of your arm chair and takes you on a ride across the desert or possibly even through space? Yes? Well I have some great news, here’s another album which is going to do just that. Monomyth are a five piece instrumental band from the Netherlands, a land that we all know has a certain herb in abundance which has no doubt helped these chaps create a splendid self-titled little record… If you are a fan of bands like Colour Haze, Monkey3 and latter day Ancestors then you are going to love this album.”
Domadora – Tibetan Monk (2013)
“Formed about two years ago, DOMADORA is a burning Parisian trio into Psychedelic Heavy/Stoner Rock who (self) released “Tibetan Monk” a couple of months back. This debut album contains 7 songs including two of them who can be considered as intro and outro, considering their relative short length and different structures compared to an overall who’s basically very much based on long jams and psyched-out stonerish vibes… DOMADORA is not the kind of band you’re used to listen from the generally rigorous french scene, a band with an emphasis on jams and obviously a very LIVE approach, this is already a very distinctive caracter and if it’s coupled with tightness and heaviness in fairly above the average measures, you’re then right to think that DOMADORA is a wild and vaporous entity that deserves immediate attention.”
